She is a link between past and present, great granddaughter of Queen Victoria through Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Alice and Alice's daughter Princess Victoria of Hesse, Marchioness of Milford Haven. This Princess Alice is the mother of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh Philip. Princess Alice bore three daughters and Philip. Political turmoil in Greece, especially after a disastrous war with arch-enemy Turkey, and the Axis invasion of Greece resulted in severe disruptions to her life. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1930. This resulted in her son Phillip being raised by Louis and Edwina Mountbatten, Louis being an officer of the Royal Navy. Alice's sons-in-law fought with the Germans while Phillip served the UK with distinction participating in, among other events, the battle for Crete, the Battle of Cape Matapan, serving on destroyers, and stoking boilers.
