Princess Alice of Athlone was the last grand child of Queen Victoria to pass away, in 1981. She saw the dissolution of links between Royal Britain and the various German principalities. When she was born in 1883, a trip to the New World took over a week. When she died the same trip took a few hours on a Concorde. Her Wikipedia article is here.
