She was the daughter of Princess Beatrice of Great Britain - Princess of Battenberg. According to her Wikipedia article: "Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg (Victoria Eugenie Julia Ena; 24 October 1887 – 15 April 1969) was queen consort of King Alfonso XIII of Spain. She was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom; also the first cousin of George V, Queen Maud of Norway, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, Queen Marie of Romania, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, and Queen Sophia of the Hellenes. The current King of Spain, Juan Carlos, is her grandson.' Her marriage to Alfonso XIII took some forgiving and forgetting over religious Protestant vs. Catholic issues and, for that matter, putting the 1500s behind. However, she carried the gene for hemophilia, her husband was prolifically unfaithful, and her husband's rule was ended by a popular uprising that led to the Spanish Civil War. Spain was used as a military proving grounds by foreign dictatorships. Franco claimed to stand for the monarchy, but did not let Alfonso and Ena back to rule, nor did he let Alfonso's son and heir Juan Carlos rule. The monarchy was re-established immediately after Franco's death and Alfonso XIII's grand son, King Juan Carlos, assisted transition, in spite of a Falagist shoot-em-up in the Cortes, to a monarquía parlamentaria.
