One way of supporting a mass of hair on each side of the head is to install a framework that carries the load to the head that probably accounts for the head band in this portrait; there is probably another one on the other side of her head and there may be mesh spread in between to spread the load. The emphasis on the placing curls on the sides of the head is replaced here by pouffs of hair instead of curls. Her abudantly jeweled jacket, stomacher, and skirt match.
