1630s (middle) Vittoria della Rovere by Justus Sustermans (Baring Fine Art)

Previous

From Baring Fine Art.

Baring Fine Art's notes for this portrait are, "The present copper can be dated to the 1630's shortly after the marriage of the sitter in 1634 to Grand Duke Ferdinand II de'Medici. The youth of the sitter and bright colors of her dress would point to the copper being painted before her estrangement from her husband in 1642. The pearl brocading of the dress should be compared to portrait by Sustermans in the Galleria degli Uffizi which Langedijk dates to "probably but long after the marriage" (see K. Langedijk, The Portraits of the Medici, Florence 1983, Vol. II, p. 1498, cat. no. 45, reproduced). Sustermans is recorded as painting ritrattini on copper in the 1630's, presenting bills on the 6th March 1635 'per haver fatto un ritratto in rame piccolo della...Ser.ma Grand.a al naturale' and on the 24th April 1638 for 'due ritrattini piccoli sul rame della... Ser.ma Padrona' (see ibid)."
