1837 The Bernadotte Family by Fredrik Westin (Gripsholm Palace, Mariefred Sweden)

The current and past Queens of Sweden are to the right in this Westin group portrait - Josefina in white and Desideria (née Desirée Clary) in black. King Oscar I wears full military uniform. King Oscar made serious efforts to unite Sweden and Norway. Queen Josefina successfully promoted causes such as religious freedom and inheritance rights for women - Scandinavian progressivism before Scandinavian progressivism became famous (or infamous for viewers and listeners of right-wing propaganda outlets in the USA). Acting to promote national unity is a hallmark of successful monarchies today.

1837 The Bernadotte Family by Fredrik Westin (Gripsholm Palace, Mariefred Sweden)

The Bernadotte Ladies are still in the pre-Victorian Romantic era as far as their dress is concerned in this 1837 Westin portrait. Josefina wears a straight neckline and Desideria wears a bateau neckline and the shoulders are covered (the artist suggests warm weather). Desideria wears lace epaulettes to cover her huge puffed sleeves while Josefina wears something like gigot sleeves. Desideria didn't like cold weather - she wears a wrap. Both Ladies wear white shoes.
