1862 Concert in the Tuileries by Edouard Manet (National Gallery, London)

This 1862 Monet shows the high society of Paris out for the day in the grounds of Napoleon III's Tuilleries palace.

Groovin' on a Sunday Afternoon

The ladies in front left are portrayed in chic daywear with bonnets and coats that envelop their voluminous crinolines. The lady to the right wears a poke bonnet while her companion wears a less expansive bonnet and a black veil. Others are dressed in hats among the penguin-like men with their stovepipe hats. The short dresses of the girls in the foreground contrasts with the bundled ladies to the right.
