The cage crinoline came out in the middle-1850s, well after this portrait was painted. She wears a full skirt, probably supported by a composite formed from crin, horsehair, and linen. The composite material was called "crinoline" and the steel cage replacement took over the name crinoline from the material.

Her bodice has a vee-shaped panel edged with a lace bertha. She wore the same hair styleand her dress has a shallow vee neckline that she used through much of her life. She also wore floral headdresses through much of her life.
