1849 Harriet Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, Duchess of Sutherland by Franz Winterhalter (private collection)
The private collection is
that of the Sutherland family; the authoritative Reisberg catalog places this
with the Duke of Sutherland, Dunrobin Castle, Sutherland, Scotland. Sutherland
is located in the northwest portion of Great Britain extending in a band from
the Atlantic Ocean on the west to the North Sea on the east. Probably due to
the depredation of the first Duchess of Sutherland, the land is thinly
populated and the County difficult to reach.
The
Duchess of Sutherland wears a pre-crinoline evening dress with a full skirt,
much of it concealed under her wrap in this 1849 Winterhalter.
