1855 watercolor by Arthur Diets, of the entrance to the Galerie des Glaces, Hôtel de Ville, Paris
This watercolor shows spectacularly dressed ladies at one of the events held during Victoria and Albert's 1855 visit to France. Napoleon III made a point of ending the centuries of enmity between England and France, a step that contributed to creation of the democratic alliances that fought two wars in the twentieth century.
The skirts are very full domes, suggesting the use of cage crinolines.
