Her Majesty Queen Victoria and the Duchess of Sutherland
Queen Victoria and Duchess of Sutherland Harriet Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, who were very close friends, are depicted together in this print. The Duchess was from the Howard family while her mother-in-law is notorious for forcing farmers off of their land to raise sheep. Sutherland is in the northwest corner of Scotland. Harriet was a dedicated progressive. She was also granddaughter of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. The Duchess, and subsequent Sutherland Ladies, served Queen Victoria as Mistress of the Robes.
The Queen's dress appears to have a double neckline. The uppermost
is a scoop neckline while the dress also appears to have an off shoulder
vee neckline with a W-shaped bertha beneath it. Both Ladies appear to be
wearing no jewelry.
