The first paragraph of her Wikipedia article provides a terse synopsis of her life, "Louisa Frederica Augusta Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, formerly Louisa Montagu, Duchess of Manchester, née Luise Fredericke Auguste, Countess von Alten (15 June 1832 – 15 July 1911) was a German born British aristocrat sometimes referred to as the 'Double Duchess' due to her marriage to both the Duke of Manchester and the Duke of Devonshire.”
She was estranged from her first husband, by whom she bore five children, and then had a relationaship with Spencer Cavndish who became Duke of Devonshire, acting as his hostess until her first husband died allowing her to marry and become Duchess of Devonshire in 1892.
She held the Devonshire House Ball in 1897 to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign. Her dress appears in this Subalbum, but others worn are not in this site because they do not reflect dresses actually worn by the characters the ball attendees were portraying.
