This photo shows Empress Eugenie wearing an austere dress with a cuirasse bodice.
From the LIFE magazine archives; sepia tone removed by gogm.
The fullness of her skirt begins at knee height. This is characteristic of mid 1870s dress as is the cuirasse bodice, but the austere material and lack of frills suggests the 1880s before the return of big bustles. Napoleon III died in early 1873 and her son died in 1879 so she is dressed in mourning colors.
