1818-1820 French silk redingote (Metropolitan Museum of Art - New York City, New York USA)

This is fancy material for a ride. The temptation to enhance the posterior is a persistent theme in fashion. The bodice has a triangular front section with ridges spread like those of a fan. The back has a triangular section above where the skirt material is gathered. The collar is very wide - a dominating feature. The sleeves appear to be separate, attaching at a ring cuff at the bases of the puffed sections.

Keywords:  1818, French, high neckline, collar, fan front bodice, rosettes, long close upper puffed sleeves, belt, natural waistline, close skirt
