For me, the word "redingote" conjures up images of columnar coats worn over Empire style dresses. Here is a redingote worn over pre-Revolutionary dress with a spoon-like waistline associated with robes à la françaises. The bodice is sewn on to a separate skirt. This garment appears to have wide lapels, but they form a capelet in back.

Keywords:  1790, redingote, vee neckline, capelet, buttons, long tight sleeves, spoon waistline, full skirt
