For me, the word "redingote" conjures up images of columnar coats worn over Empire style dresses. Here is a redingote worn over pre-Revolutionary dress with a spoon-like waistline associated with robes à la françaises. The bodice is sewn on to a separate skirt. This garment appears to have wide lapels, but they form a capelet in back.
