ca. 1802 Marie Brunswick-Wolfenbuettel, born Princess of Baden by Christian August Schwartz (Boris Wilnitsky)

Boris Wilnitsky has this note about her, "Duchess Marie was born on 7. September 1782 in Karlsruhe as Marie Elisabeth Wilhelmine, Princess of Baden, the daughter of Karl Ludwig Markgraf of Baden and Amelie Princess of Hessen-Darmstadt. She married on 1. November 1802 in Karlsruhe with Friedrich Wilhelm Duke of Brunswyck-Wolfenbuettel (commonly known as "The Black Duke"), son of Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Duke of Brunswyck-Wolfenbuettel and Augusta Hanover, Princess Royal of Great Britain and Ireland. Duchess Marie died on 20.April 1808 at the age of 25 in Bruchsal, Germany.

Our portrait was obviously painted in 1802 to the occasion of the young Princess' wedding."

Marie of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel wears a waist band to create a waistline accentuated by the criss-cross wrapping of material.
