This portrait of Lady Anne Barnard may have been painted upon her return from colonial duty at Capetown in 1802; as noted by the ships in the background. Her long, loose, curly coiffure suggests that date or earlier. Her dress appears to have no distinct bodice. She wears a high-necked chemise beneath her dress.
