SUBALBUM:  Caroline of Baden, Queen of Bavaria

According to her Wikipedia article and the Wikipedia article for her husband, Caroline Friederike Wilhelmine von Baden led an interesting life. She married Duke Maximilian of Pfalz-Zweibrücken who then inherited Bavaria. He married  Auguste Wilhelmine Marie of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1785. She bore five children, but died in 1796 after they fled an army revolt in 1789 and French forces in 1784. Maximillian married Caroline in 1797and she bore eight children of whom two sets of twin daughters, Elisabeth Ludovika and Amelie Auguste and Sophie and Marie Anne Leopoldine, and another daughter, Marie Ludovika  survived to adulthood. The abolition of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 changed Maximilian's title from Elector to King of Bavaria. Caroline was allowed to keep her Lutheran faith, a source of difficulty when she was interred. Caroline's daughter Sophie married Archduke Franz Karl of Austria and installed her son Franz Joseph on the Austrian throne. Franz Joseph married Ludovika's daughter Elisabeth, "Sisi." Another of Sophie's children, Maximillian, went off to Mexico with his wife Charlotte of Belgium, Carlota, on their ill-fated venture.
