Duchesse du Maine by Pierre Gobert (Musée national du Château de Versailles - Versailles France)

The armor-like half bodice seems to have been in fashion as shown in this Gobert portrait of the Duchesse du Maine.

From Wikimedia; posted as an uprgraded image on 29 June 2012.

Her dress is almost a duplicate of that worn by Louise-Françoise de Bourbon. She wears a half bodice that covers only her lower trunk. Her breasts are covered by her chemise. Her sleeves are divided into three parts, first by what appear to be jeweled arm bands and then by lace engageantes from which billow the puffy cuffs of her chemise.
