1759-1762 Caroline, Duchess of Marlborough by Sir Joshua Reynolds (private collection)
Her article in thepeerage is here.
British customs for portraits differed from the French - the
Duchess of Marlborough dresses luxuriously, but casually, in this Reynolds from
1759-62. The Duchess is dressed retro with a criss-cross bodice and,
especially, the big puffed sleeves and billowing plain cuffs-engageantes.
