ca. 1735 Henrietta Godolphin Duchess of Newcastle by Charles Jervas (Philip Mould)

The casual atmosphere of this portrait set against wild country with the Duchess wearing a casual, albeit silk, dress is unmistakably British.

The bodice of the Duchess of Newcastle's dress has a round, almost natural waistline, in this Jervas work from around 1735. Her skirt is also unsupported.
