1780s Louise Marie Adelaïde de Bourbon while duchesse de Chartres - wife of Louis Philippe II Joseph d'Orleans by Joseph Duplessis (Musée Condé - Chantilly France)
Her husband had a liaison with her Lady-in-waiting, the comtesse de Genlis.
Duchess Louise looks like she is wearing baggy trousers as she
reads on the beach in this 1780s Duplessis portrait. Only a Lady of means could
venture to lie down in sand in a white dress, but even she has to find shelter
from the sea breeze to protect her coiffure. Sandal straps are visible on her
closer foot.
