The term "open robe" describes dresses with bodice and
under-skirt covered by a continuous outer garment - like this dress of Maria
Luisa's. In this case, she appears to be wearing a vest under a jacket - a
jacket that immediately becomes her over-skirt. The term "open robe"
was devised after the 1700s.
