1781/1782 Lady Cunliffe by Thomas Hoppner (National Gallery of Art, Washington DC)

This work is located in Washington, DC. Prolonged residency there is known to be highly hazardous to one's moral health. One symptom is having a proclivity for revolving doors; another is a burdensomely heavy wallet; yet another is blinding myopia. A suspected cause is too many free lunches, trips, and premium tickets to sporting events. There are some who disagree with this broadly accepted etiology - for example Roberts and Alito. They may, however, also subscribe to the belief that the Earth is flat.

Thomas Hopner portrays Lady Cunliffe wearing a broad-brimmed hat and a long-sleeved dress with a fichu covering part of her décolletage.

Keywords:  1781, Hopner, British, long straight coiffure, hat, square décolletage, ruffles, fichu, long straight sleeves, cuffs
