Marie Antoinette wearing a redingote sketch
From ladyreading. According to Ralph Weidemann, the colors are modern, not original.
While France and Britain were at war or bitter rivals, Marie
Antoinette introduced the British "riding coat," shown here, to court
fashion. The words "riding coat" were altered to
"redingote." The redingote combined a jacket with an over-skirt. The
designer of this reddingote outfit appears to have edged the over-skirt part of
her redingote with skirt material in traingles ending at buttoned rosettes and
the skirt hem with triangled-edges of redingote material also ending at
buttoned rosettes. The over-skirt edge and hem are decorated with fur.
