1778 Queen Charlotte with Charlotte the Princess Royal by Benjamin West
Princess Royal
Charlotte, shown here in 1778 with her mother Queen Charlotte, married prince
Frederick of Württemberg. Her one child was stillborn.
Queen Charlotte
wears a high and wide coiffure with a sparingly jeweled cloth headdress in this
1778 West portrait. She appears to be wearing a dress where the over-skirt halves join at the bow just below her neckline as
she sews and as her daughter shows her some cloth. The Royal Collection version
of the original is here. The Queen’s dress
is tannish-gray while the Princess Royal’s is orange. The Queen and Princess
Royal wear subdued forward-back flared engageantes.
