1548 Isabella of Portugal by Tiziano Vecelli ("Titian") (Prado)

An overall view of Titian's 1548 portrait of Isabella of Portugal wearing Iberian-style dress. She married Charles V. One of her sons, Felipe became Felipe II, King of Spain. Three of Felipe's four wives are subjects of Minialbums. The next four images are parts of this portrait.

According to Herbert Norris, Tudor Costume and Fashion, p. 206 (Dover re-issue 1997) - "A beautiful Spanish sleeve is worn by the Empress Isabella...The whole dress...is composed of rose-colored velvet ornamented with rich gold braid three- to four-inches in width; down the sides of the bodice front it is narrowed by folding. The edges of the sleeve are caught together with jewels in gold mounts. Two gold cords fixed with pearls at intervals and arranged in lines decorate the white transparent lawn partelet and small under-sleeves..."
