Velázquez painted this portrait of Queen Margarita in his hay day, in the 1630s as well as various gorgeously turned out infantas, with and without dwarves. She died in 1611 so this is a posthumous portrait.

She is wearing a saya, complete with the high enclosing collar and ruff and hanging sleeves. By this time, the skirt had much become fuller.
