Margaret of Savoy in red costume with a white lace ruff and a pearl headdress by follower of Scipione Pulzone (Il Gaetano) (auctioned by Bonhams)

Bonhams auctioned this as "Noblewoman, said to be Margaret of Austria, Duchess of Parma,” but their auction notes include this, "We are grateful to Alan Stubbs for informing us that the sitter in the present portrait approximates very closely to a portrait that was said to be of Margaret of Savoy (1589-1655), the wife of Francesco IV Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, which was last sold at Christie’s, 7 July, 1995, lot 228.” This solved a basic problem - this could not be Margaret of Parma (1522-1586), unless it was done posthumously. The face is under age 40, but the late 1500s-early 1600s coiffure would have made her older than 40. Compare to the portrait of Brigida Spinola Doria.
