Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse

Princess Alice wears a dress with the full skirt of the crinoline era, but with what appears to be the square neckline of the bustle era. This could date to 1869 when some crinolines were made fuller in back presaging the arrival of bustles a year later.
