1782-1787 Maria Feodorovna wearing a hooped skirt - olive-green version by J. Pullman after Pompeo Batoni (location unknown to gogm)
Pompeo Batoni portrayed Maria Feodorovna wearing a dress with an open robe (over-skirt) and petticoat (under-skirt) and a closed bodice. The over-skirt is trimmed with ruching decorated with bows matching that of her under-skirt(s) and flowers while the under-skirt has two levels, set apart by ruching, decorated with bows to match her skirt. The vest-like bodice appears to be cut to allow the sleeves of her chemise, that do not reach to the elbow, to show. She wears her favorite single large bow and frill to emphasize her décolletage. The over-skirt is pulled up in a manner similar to that of a mantua earlier in the 18th century or late 17th century. The size of the headdress is lower than many of her portraits, but it still stands high.
