She was Princess-Tsaritsa Alexandra's older sister and married one generation earlier into the Romanov family than Alexandra. She married Grand Duke Sergei who was homosexual. According to her Wikipedia article, they eventually became the foster parents of Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna. Sergei was assassinated in 1905 after which Elisabeth gave up her worldly possessions to found and be Abbess of Convent of Sts. Martha and Mary and minister to the needs of the poor. She was assassinated by the Bolsheviks in 1918. She is honored with nine others at the West Door of Westminster Abbey that commemorates twentieth century martyrs including murdered Salvadoran Archbishop Óscar Romero, Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer murdered for opposing the Hitler regime, and murdered Reverend Martin Luther King Junior.
