1869 November Empress Eugénie at the opening of the Suez Canal

Empress Eugénie attended the opening of the Suez Canal, as depicted here, along with other European royalty. She wasn't very mindful of Muslim sensibilities in this instance (compare to her meeting Sultan Abdülaziz) and she appears to be wearing a crucifix. She and the Lady behind her may already have bad sunburns.

I have read that understandings of time vary. In the USA, the Crusades are jsut "history," something that occurred long ago with little meaning today while they may as well have occurred yesterday or just a short time ago in parts of the Muslim world, fresh injuries and insults.

Keywords:  Empress Eugénie, Empress, Bonaparte family, French, Lady-in-Waiting, straight coiffure, feathered headdress, off shoulder scoop neckline, bertha, engageantes, modesty piece, natural waistline, full skirt, over-skirt, necklace, jeweled crucifix
