Bain collection images often have an American connection and the Duchesse de la Rochefoucauld, née Mattie Mitchell daughter of Oregon Senator John H. Mitchell, is no exception. A 1915 article in The Pittsburgh Press called her marriage to Duc François-Alfred-Gaston XVI "Purely a love match..."
The New York Times ran a story about the wedding in 1892.
Mattie's dress has a square neckline, but her pelisse spread over-bodice has a vee neckline. Her dress also has a natural waistline and mild leg-o-mutton sleeves.
