1605 Lady Arabella Stuart by Robert Peake (National Galleries of Scotland - Edinburgh Scotland)

Lady Arabella wears a circular neck ruff of plain material over a partlet that creates a vee neckline that is framed by a lace bertha in this 1605 Peake portrait. The lace is formed into equilateral triangles surrounding circular floral motifs that fill in much of the space, a sign that lacemaking has achieved a technical breakthrough. There is just a hint of a wheel fathingale visible at the bottom of the image. Save for the tabbed bodice junction, her dress has just simple long sleeves with cuffs without false or hanging sleeves.
