ca. 1590 Elizabeth Vernon, Countess of Southampton by ? (location unknown to gogm)

Lady Elizabeth was one of older Queen Elizabeth's chief Ladies-in-waiting, but became pregnant out of wedlock, was discovered and married to Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton in 1598, and was sent from court. Her Wikipedia article is here.

The artist catches Lady Vernon not dressed to impress, but to live her life by doing things like combing her hair. She appears to be wearing a diaphanous over-skirt that originates at the base of her bodice. A ruff and a jeweled ornament can be seen to the right above her robes.
