1578 Alice Brandon by Nicholas Hilliard (Victoria and Albert Museum, London UK)

Nicholas Hilliard was a noted portraitist and miniaturist of the era. This Hilliard portrait shows what looks like a ruff floating on Alice Brandon's neck.

Her dress is unlike many of those in this album. It has a jewel neckline beneath a ruff attached to her neck (I used the keyword "floating ruff" to describe it). She is wearing a black garment, possibly a vest. Maybe her dress had a square or crescent neckline, but that is irrelevant in this portrait where a jewel neckline on what looks like a modern blouse is what is seen. She also wears a pointed attifet headdress in black as a widow would.
