Susanna Temple wears a ruff with an Empire waistline and a full skirt instead of a grotesque wheel farthingale in this 1621 portrait.
The vee neckline and farthingale are gone, the waistlines being suitable for the Duchesse d'Angouleme of the early 1800s. But she wears a coat with tabbed openings for her hanging sleeves and two back-flared cuffs for each sleeve. Her sleeves are slashed down their lengths to reveal white material beneath, the openings being bound by lacing.
