Anthonis van Dyck portrays the lace-edged collars, balloon sleeves, and jacket bodice worn under a black surcoat by Charlotte Butkens in 1631. Some sites show just the bodice and head, making this appear to be a grotesque optical illusion.
The hanging sleeves appear to be reduced to vestiges or they are tied off (look at how lumpy they look) to keep them out of the way.
