SUBALBUM:  Queen Augusta of Prussia, reluctant first Empress of united Germany

She was independent-minded, opposed to Bismarck and his belligerent policies, snubbed Bismarck's wife after Bismarck had attacked her publicly, and she had to accept the imperial crown when Bismarck's wars made her Empress. She was briefly succeeded by progressive-leaning Princess Royal Victoria and then by the ultra-conservatice Augusta Victoria known as Empress Augusta. So this Augusta is called Queen Augusta of Prussia to avoid confusion.

Her complete lack of influence and discontent shows just how limited women were until very recently in Germany. Augusta would probably be proud of Angela Merkel. Her Wikipedia article is here.
