Élisabeth Charlotte d'Orléans was born in 1676. Her mother, Liselotte von der Pfalz, aspired to have her marry a lofty Prince. Among the matches considered for her were William III of England, not done because he was Protestant, and Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I. She married Leopold, Duke of Lorraine, in 1698. It was a successful marriage that produced 13 children of whom five survived to adulthood. One of her children, Francis, became Holy Roman Emperor and married Maria Theresia who had a child named Maria Antonia who married the future King Louis XVI.
