Did you think you would see an image of a Great Emancipator here? Lincoln? Wilburforce? They wore pants! While Emperor Pedro II was on the road, Isabelle was regent. On one such occasion, she emancipated slaves in Brasil in 1888 by signing the Lei Aurea, or Golden Law. As a result, she is known as Isabel the Redemptress.
