Many Americans do not know Brazil was an Empire ruled by the Braganças from Portugal early in its existence. According to her Wikipedia article, she was the daughter of King Don Francesco I (Francis I) of the Italian branch of the House of Bourbon and his wife Maria Isabel (Maria Isabella).
