SUBALBUM:  Renée de France

Renée was the daughter of Anne de Bretagne. She was Claude de France’s sister. According to her Wikipedia article, Renée became a protestant. Her husband, Ercole II d’Este, turned her in to the Inquisition for heresy, forcing her to temporarily lose custody of her daughters until she recanted. She never attended mass afterwards. Catherine de Medici tried to make her recant protestantism in vain. Her mother-in-law was Pope Alexander VI’s daughter Lucrezia Borgia. She bore five children including Anna d’Este.
